An Itch You Can’t Scratch

We are doing the normal baby’s-first-Christmas stuff here at our house – choosing gifts carefully, discussing how Santa will be handled.  Begging to open presents early.  Okay, that’s me.  My husband is going to have to be the stickler on that one in our house.  Wrapping presents horribly, swearing to be more like Martha Stewart next year with the beautiful wrapping and the handmade presents.  Trying to get the perfect picture of this wiggly little almost-one year old.  And thinking about how our family has grown and whether we want to try to have another child some day.

You know why women get the 2nd baby itch? Because we all have bad memories! I thought it was just me – this is a known fact that I have a bad memory. Ask my husband who likes to tease me about a memory I swear I have of us being at a used bookstore shortly after we met and he swears didn’t happen. Sure, there are jokes about women’s hormones right after giving birth making them forget how horrible that part was so they’d want to do the whole thing all over again.

But I think it’s more than that. You see a woman struggling with the weight of her pregnant belly and you think “geez, I was never that big” but you can’t really remember what it was like to look down and have that belly. Or you see a belly cast a friend did on Facebook and wish you had done one as well.  So you want to do the whole thing over again, swearing you’ll do the journals and the belly casts and you’ll really remember this time.

And I worry that I won’t get over this itch ever. Does it go away?  Currently I can’t watch “A Baby Story” or any shows like that, because it makes the itch super intense.  Although, most people advised me not to watch that when I was pregnant either, so I am wondering what the target audience is for that show.

We hope you have a wonderful holiday season, rich with your family traditions and full of hugs.  And good food.  =)
